Rising to 13,971 feet, Mount Ouray sits in the southern stretch of the Sawatch Range near Poncha Springs. Named after the Ute leader Chief Ouray, the mountain carries both geographic and cultural significance in the region.
Locally, it’s sometimes referred to as “the Devil’s Armchair,” a nickname inspired by its rugged, carved-out ridgelines that give the mountain a dramatic, almost throne-like appearance when viewed from the valley. With its steep faces and distinctive profile, Mt. Ouray stands out as one of the more visually striking peaks in the area—less about gentle alpine slopes and more about bold, sculptural terrain that feels shaped by something a little wilder.
